Overseas Business by Sajo Oyang

Northbound trawling business : has two types including the joint project over pollack trawling with Russia began from 2003, and the pollack fishing pursuant to the Korean-Russian Fisheries Agreement. In the corresponding business year, we aim to augment the sales of Pollacks as we obtained more fishing quotas in the previous year. Accordingly, we expect the profitability to improve for the better. As for the business in New Zealand : profit generation has been a bit dented due to surging oil prices and toughened-up fisheries restrictions by New Zealand. However, we kept ameliorating the profit structure since 2005 by replacing fuels and saving costs on repair charges. In addition, the pricings of squids increased to add to more profits. As on the business with tuna longliners : the sector has struggled due to overall slump in fishing in the South Pacific area and rising oil prices. Thankfully, the continuing strength of yen and a decrease in the amount of tuna for sushi into the Japanese market led to a rise in the tuna pricings, helping us to better our profitability dramatically.

Affiliated with Sajo Group in June 2007, our fleets combined with those from Sajo CS Co., Ltd. and Sajo Daerim Co., Ltd. can amount to 51 longliners, 5 purse seines, 7 trawlers, 3 bottom longliners and 2 draggers, totaling 68 vessels. This is the largest amount in Korea. Overall, our profitability has been greatly bettered since we became affiliated with Sajo Group in terms of cost on the back of the realization of the economies of scale. The business with tuna seiners is doing well as the fishing amount escalated on the back of bettered fishing efficiency. This year, too, the stable fishing amount and stronger foreign currency rate helped to increase sales revenues. We expect Sajo Oyang will continue to grow on the back of stabilized sources of fishing, and increased sales through diversified sales channels.

North pacific Trawling : As of now, 2 trawlers are fishing mainly pollacks in the Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk in the North Pacific included as the economic zone of Russia. Our Ship Oyang with the capacity of 5,000 tons is used by Tralcom, a joint enterprise with Russia, in 2003 and obtained the Russian nationality. Its name is Zaliv Zaviaka and it catches nearly 12,000 to 15,000 tons of pollacks and other bottom fishes every year to provide them back to Korea. Ship Oyang No. 96 provides the pollacks of nearly 3,500 to 5,000 tons a year from the North Pacific to Korea. To overcome the crisis in the northbound fishery due to a reduction in the pollack fishing quota, we plan a foray into the central high seas in the North Pacific. We currently strive for breaking new grounds in other sources of fisheries.

Tuna Purse Seiner : Tuna purse seiner “Sea Chase” with the capacity of 1,200 G/T comes with the cutting-edge equipment such as a helicopter. With the Central-West Pacific Ocean as the fishing ground, it catches yellowfin and skipjack tuna to be used as ingredients for canned tuna. The main waters cover the entire Central-West Pacific Ocean and use a large, 1.6-km-long and 200-m-deep fishing net to catch tunas. There are estimated to be a colony of fishes of 200 to 300 tons, brightening the outlook of fisheries here.
